Two solar power installation projects in Coalinga were officially completed Monday at Pleasant Valley State Prison and Coalinga State Hospital as part of the state's effort to utilize clean technology in the fight against climate change.
Solar is expected to provide 24% of the hospital's electricity during the first year, and the prison is one of 12 state correctional facilities using solar electricity, officials said. Together, the projects can generate up to 3.22 megawatts of electricity, the California Department of General Services said.
The projects were installed with no up-front costs to the state under an agreement where the solar provider installs the system using third-party financing and sells the renewable electricity back to the facility.
