Crothall Laundry Services of Wayne, Penn., will employ more than 80 people at a plant in Manteca to provide laundry and linen services to hospitals, rest homes and other health care facilities in Northern California.

Formally breaking ground on the 60,000-square-foot facility last week at 2365 N. Airport Road, officials said they hope to have the new plant in operation by early summer.

Manteca City Councilman Steve DeBrum welcomed the project.

"This is big. Anytime that you can build upon in the situation that will support the community, that's going to be important," he said.

Designed to process as much as 55 million pounds of laundry per year, the Crothall plant is being built to U.S. Green Building Council sustainable building standards. It also includes more than 2,900 square feet of office space and parking for 100 cars.

Crothall said the plant is strategically located near several key transportation hubs.

It is on a 5.4 acre parcel within the newly opened CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Manteca, a 190-acre industrial park with direct access to the adjacent Union Pacific Railroad intermodal yard, where cargo is transferred between trucks and trains. It also offers easy access to Interstates 5 and 205 and Highway 99.

Crothhall signed a 10-year lease with CenterPoint Properties of Oak Brook, Ill., a major owner, manager and developer of industrial real estate. Terms were not disclosed.

Crothall operates nearly 50 facilities that process laundry and linens throughout the United States. The Manteca operation is the second the company has built to its own designs.

CenterPoint invests in major port logistics markets connecting North America's principal freight routes. It owns and manages more than 45 million square feet of building space and has 6,000 acres of ground under development.
