LATHROP - Nautilus Group Inc., a real estate investment and development firm based in Berkeley, plans to open a manufacturing operation in Lathrop to produce modular building components.
A wholly owned subsidiary, NEMO Building Systems LLC, is purchasing a 118,000-square-foot facility at 18231 Murphy Parkway previously occupied by an automotive fuel tank manufacturer.
Robb Walker, Nautilus' chief operating officer, said Tuesday that the company's business is to design, build and own a variety of residential, institutional and medical buildings.
The NEMO facility would be dedicated solely to providing components for projectsNautilus plans to build in the Berkeley-Oakland area in the next few years.
"We believe very strongly in modular building technologies," he said.
The company expects to employ 50 to 60 people when it reaches full production sometime in 2014.
Walker said the company is not hiring production workers at the current time but will be starting that process closer to the opening.
