500 jobs coming to Fresno plus more to Sacramento

 SACRAMENTO

April 11, 2013 9:00pm

•  Will staff new call center

•  Part of state’s implementation of Affordable Care law

The Central Valley could soon see some very tangible benefits from the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare,” in the form of hundreds of new jobs.

The positions will staff new call centers to open in the fall for Covered California, which is the name of the state’s health benefit exchange that is to provide health insurance benefits.

One call center will be in Fresno, where 500 people will be hired. A second will be in Rancho Cordova, near Sacramento. Its size has not been announced. A third will be located in Contra Costa County.

“These three centers will be on the front lines of helping millions of Californians get access to coverage,” says Covered California Executive Director Peter Lee.

“We need to have skilled customer care representatives helping individuals and small employers sort through the benefits and federal support, and help them understand the new rules,” he says.

Call center staff will speak English and Spanish, along with languages common in California such as Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese and Armenian.

Federal dollars fund the creation of the call centers and their initial staffing.
