VISALIA -- With corn prices up and demand rising, work is under way in the Valley to develop two biorefineries to make ethanol without using the golden grain.
Pixley Biogas has won a grant of nearly $4.7 million to design and build a plant to convert manure from dairies into biogas to fuel an ethanol refinery in Tulare County.
The grant from the California Energy Commission will require the company to match the award with private money or services amounting to about $4.9 million. Some of the grant depends on an environmental analysis of the project. Pixley Biogas expects the plant to be completed in about 18 months.
According to the energy commission, the plant will process 36 million gallons of manure. It will reportedly eliminate more than 68 million pounds per year of carbon dioxide and other air-polluting manure emissions -- about the equivalent of taking 6,300 cars off the road.
