Buchanan Crossroads development adds retail to Clovis intersection

BY SYDNEY MAKI

JUNE 18, 2016

Come November, an empty lot in Clovis will become the third phase of the Buchanan Crossroads development at Herndon and Fowler avenues.

Chipotle, Five Guys, Blaze Pizza, Sport Clips, Jersey Mike’s Subs, Aqua Nails and Spa, and The Phoenician, a Mediterranean-style restaurant, already have signed leases to take spots in the development planned for the southeast corner.

“People will have more options for casual, fast restaurants,” said Michael Thomason, owner of Thomason Development, the company spearheading the project.

The project is part of a larger vision for the Clovis intersection, which began when phase one was completed in 2000 with the construction of Vons on the southwest corner.

The second phase added a Fresh & Easy on the northwest corner in 2008, which has since closed. The building has not yet been filled.

The third phase will produce two buildings on the southeast corner, but the developer hopes to see even more built on the 10.5-acre property.

The northeast corner is built out with a Walgreens pharmacy, Save Mart supermarket, Starbucks coffee house and smaller businesses.

The current plan for phase three is first to construct two buildings of about 25,000 square feet total, Thomason said.

Construction started about three weeks ago, and the work is expected to be completed in November. The land was a vacant lot before the construction crew arrived, so developing the intersection is expected to bring more business to the area, Thomason said.

Although the overall vision has been in the works for nearly 16 years, efforts to develop the area were stunted when the Great Recession hit in 2008.

“This was a project that was stalled by the recession,” Thomason said. “We’re still looking at adding another 80,000 square feet, hopefully in the next few years.”

Casual eateries are snatching up space in the new buildings, which will join the Chase Bank on the southeast corner of Herndon and Fowler avenues, across the street from Vons.

There are still one or two available suites, Thomason said. The retail spaces range from 1,300 to more than 2,500 square feet.
