Value of San Joaquin County property rises 5.5 percent

STOCKTON — Property value in San Joaquin County is greater than it was last year, according to the San Joaquin County Assessor’s Office.

Steve Bestolarides, the county’s Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk, delivered the 2016-2017 regular assessment roll to the Auditor-Controller’s Office on Monday.

Property owners can expect their tax bills to arrive in October, as they do every year.

The 2016-2017 net property tax roll is more than $65.5 billion, an increase of 5.5 percent from last year, Bestolarides said. The exact figure: $65,541,638,989.

This was Bestolarides’ first time delivering the 60,000-page roll to auditor-controller Jay Wilverding. Gone are the days of using a cart to deliver it, though. For years it's been on a disk.

“It’s been quite an experience,” Bestolarides said. “And thanks to the help of the staff, and the (information technology) department specifically, they were very helpful in setting the objectives and timelines to get this done.”

Wilverding and county treasurer Shabbir Khan said this was the first year in a long time that the tax roll had been delivered early.

The assessor-recorder-county-clerk’s office typically delivers the tax roll to the auditor controller by July 1.

“It’s also the first time the office has not requested an extension to deliver the roll,” Khan said. “They never actually use the extension, but this year Steve didn’t even request it.”

Bestolarides was appointed assessor-recorder-county clerk last August, following the retirement of Ken Blakemore, and will serve the remainder of the position’s term, which ends in 2018.

Upon his appointment to the post, Bestolarides vacated his District 3 seat on the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors. His seat was filled by Moses Zapien, who is currently running for election to the post.
