• Service sector jobs jump
• Manufacturing jobs, however, decline
Employers in California added a net 23,000 private sector jobs during the month of October, according to figures Wednesday from the payroll processing company ADP, LLC (NASDAQ: ADP) of Roseland, N.J.
As usual, the sector with the biggest growth is “service providing.” Companies there hired 21,700 additional workers last month, according to ADP. Good-producing companies, in contrast, added a mere 1,300 statewide.
By select industries:
Natural Resources/Mining and Construction added 3,700 workers
Manufacturing, however, cut employment, ending October with 2,300 fewer people on the payroll.
Professional and Business Services added 4,300 and companies classified as Trade, Transportation and Utilities firms added 5,000. "Though the 'Oil Patch' states in the South are still struggling, the South Atlantic states, such as Florida and South Carolina, are outpacing the national average for employment growth," says Ahu Yildirmaz, vice president and head of the ADP Research Institute. "A combination of factors including tourism, an improved homebuilding industry and rising incomes in the South Atlantic states are driving the growth."
