• Both seek to be low-cost international airports
• A few differences of scale, perhaps
Officials of Stockton Metropolitan Airport in the Central Valley have signed an agreement to mutually cooperate with Chengdu Shuangliu Airport, which is slightly due west of Stockton -- in Sichuan Province, China. Both airports are trying to market themselves as low-cost alternative international airports for passenger, cargo and charter services.
There are a few differences between the two airports. Chengdu Shuangliu Airport is served by more than 24 airlines, while Stockton is served by one. The Chinese airport has two terminals, Stockton one. It also has 20 different brands of restaurants and 40 different retailers. Stockton Metropolitan Airport has one restaurant and no shops. China Silicon Valley, a non-profit organization focused on facilitating business investment and collaboration between Silicon Valley cities and fast-growing cities in China, helped broker the agreement.
Stockton airport officials now hope to enlist the support of the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors to at least endorse the deal.
